ಸುಂದರಕಾಂಡ.
ಅಥ ಪಂಚಾಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ||

ತಮುದ್ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ ಪಿಂಗಾಕ್ಷಂ ಪುರತಃ ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್|
ಕೋಪೇನ ಮಹತಾssವಿಷ್ಟೋ ರಾವಣೋ ಲೋಕರಾವಣಃ||1||
ಶಂಕಾಹೃತಾತ್ಮಾ ದಧ್ಯೌ ಸ ಕಪೀಂದ್ರಂ ತೇಜಸಾ ವೃತಮ್|

ಸ|| ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಃ ಲೋಕರಾವಣಃ ಸಃ ರಾವಣಃ ಪುರತಃ ಸ್ಥಿತಂ ಮಹಾಬಾಹುಂ ಪಿಂಗಾಕ್ಷಂ ಮಹತಾ ಕೋಪೇನ ಆವಿಷ್ಟಃ ಸ ತೇಜಸಾ ವೃತಂ ಕಪೀಂದ್ರಂ ಉದ್ದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸಂಕಾಹೃತಾತ್ಮಾ ದಧ್ಯೌ||

Mighty armed Ravana who torments the whole world, looking at the tawny eyed one surrounded with brilliance, overpowered with great anger thought over with doubts in his heart.

ಕಿಮ್ ಏಷ ಭಗವಾನ್ ನಂದೀ ಭವೇತ್ ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ಇಹಾಗತಃ||2||
ಯೇನಶಪ್ತೋಽಸ್ಮಿ ಕೈಲಾಸೇ ಮಯಾ ಸಂಚಾಲಿತಾ ಪುರಾ|
ಸೋಽಯಂ ವಾನರಮೂರ್ತಿಃ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ಕಿಂಸಿದ್ಬಾಣೋಽಪಿವಾಽಸುರಃ||3||

ಸ|| ಏಷಃ ಪುರಾ ಮಯಾ ಕೈಲಾಸೇ ಸಂಚಾಲಿತೇ ಯೇನ ಶಪ್ತಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ ಭಗವಾನ್ ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ಇಹ ಆಗತಃ ನಂದೀ ಭವೇತ್ ಕಿಂ? | ಸಃ ಅಯಂ ವಾನರಮೂರ್ತಿಃ ಮಹಾಸುರಃ ಬಾಣಃ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ಕಿಂಸ್ವಿತ್ ||

'Earlier when the Kailasa was shaken by me by whom I was cursed, could he be that lord Nandi who personally came here? Could he the great Asura Bana in Vanara form?

ಸ ರಾಜಾ ರೋಷತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ ಪ್ರಹಸ್ತಂ ಮಂತ್ರಿಸತ್ತಮಮ್|
ಕಾಲಯುಕ್ತ ಮಿವಾ ಚೇದಂ ವಚೋ ವಿಪುಲ ಮರ್ಥವತ್ ||4||

ಸ|| ಸಃ ರಾಜಾ ರೋಷತಾಮ್ರಾಕ್ಷಃ ಮಂತ್ರಿಸತ್ತಮಂ ಪ್ರಹಸ್ತಂ ಕಾಲಯುಕ್ತಂ ಅರ್ಥವಿತ್ ಅವಿಪುಲಮ್ ಇದಂ ವಚಃ ವಚಃ||

That king with eyes red with anger, asked the best of ministers Prahasta with brief profound and timely words.

ದುರಾತ್ಮಾ ಪೃಚ್ಛ್ಯತಾಮೇಷ ಕುತಃ ಕಿಂ ವಾಽಸ್ಯ ಕಾರಣಮ್|
ವನಭಂಗೇ ಚ ಕೋಽಸ್ಯಾರ್ಥೋ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀನಾಂ ಚ ತರ್ಜನೇ||5||
ಮತ್ಪುರೀ ಮಪ್ರಧೃಷ್ಯಾಂ ವಾಽಽಗಮನೇ ಕಿಂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನಮ್|
ಅಯೋಧನೇ ವಾ ಕಿಂ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ಪೃಚ್ಛ್ಯತಾ ಮೇಷ ದುರ್ಮತಿಃ||6||

ಸ|| ಏಷ ದುರಾತ್ಮಾ ಪೃಚ್ಛತಾಂ ಕುತಃ ಅತ್ರ |ಕಿಂ ಕಾರಣಂ ವನಭಂಗೇ ಚ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀನಾಂ ತರ್ಜನೇ ಚ | ಅಸ್ಯ ಅರ್ಥಃ ಕಃ|ಏಷಃ ದುರ್ಮತಿಃ ಪೃಚ್ಛತಾಮ್ ಅಪ್ರಧೃಷ್ಯಾಂ ಮತ್ಪುರೀಂ ಆಗಮನೇ ಕಿಂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನಮ್| ಅಯೋಧನೇ ವಾ ಕಿಂ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ|

'Ask this wicked one where did he come from. For what reason the grove was destroyed and Rakshasis threatened? What is the meaning of this? Ask this wicked one what is the use of his coming here to my city which is difficult to access? Why did he wage war?'

ರಾವಣಸ್ಯ ವಚಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಹಸ್ತೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ |
ಸಮಾಶ್ವಸಿಹಿ ಭದ್ರಂ ತೇ ನ ಭೀಃ ಕರ್ಯಾ ತ್ವಯಾಕಪೇ||7||
ಯದಿ ತಾವತ್ ತ್ವಂ ಇಂದ್ರೇಣ ಪ್ರೇಷಿತೋ ರಾವಣಾಲಯಮ್|
ತತ್ ತ್ವಮಾಖ್ಯಾಹಿ ಮಾಭೂತ್ತೇ ಭಯಂ ವಾನರ ಮೋಕ್ಷ್ಯಸೇ||8||

ಸ|| ರಾವಣಸ್ಯ ವಚಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಹಸ್ತಃ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ | ಹೇ ಕಪೇ ಭದ್ರಂ ತೇ |ತ್ವಯಾ ಭೀಃ ನ ಕಾರ್ಯಾ |ಸಮಾಶ್ವಸಿಹಿ||ವಾನರ ತ್ವಂ ಇಂದ್ರೇಣ ರಾವಣಾಲಯಂ ಪ್ರೇಷಿತಃ ಯದಿ ತಾವತ್ ತತ್ ತ್ವಂ ಆಖ್ಯಾಹಿ | ಭಯಂ ಮಾಭೂತ್ | ಮೋಕ್ಷ್ಯಸೇ|

Hearing those words of Ravana Prahasta spoke these words." Oh Monkey feel safe. You need not be afraid. Be relaxed. Oh Vanara if you were sent by Indra to this place of Ravana that you tell us. Do not be afraid. You will be released".

ಯದಿ ವೈಶ್ರವಣಸ್ಯ ತ್ವಂ ಯಮಸ್ಯ ವರುಣಸ್ಯ ಚ|
ಚಾರ ರೂಪ ಮಿದಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟೋ ನಃ ಪುರೀಮಿಮಾಮ್||9||
ವಿಷ್ಣುನಾ ಪ್ರೇಷಿತೋಪಿ ವಾ ದೂತೋ ವಿಜಯಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿಣಾ|

ಸ|| ಇದಂ ಚಾರರೂಪಮ್ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ನಃ ಇಮಾಂ ಪುರೀಂ ಪ್ರವಿಷ್ಟಃ ತ್ವಂ ವೈಶ್ರವಣಸ್ಯ ಯಮಸ್ಯ ವರುಣಸ್ಯ ಚ ವಿಜಯಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿಣಾ ವಿಷ್ಣುನಾ ದೂತಃ ಪ್ರೇಷಿತಃ ವಾ ಅಪಿ||

" You entered this city in this spies form. Were you sent by Vaisravana or Yama or Varuna. Or Vishnu desirous of victory sent you as a messenger".

ನ ಹಿ ತೇ ವಾನರಂ ತೇಜೋ ರೂಪಮಾತ್ರಂ ತು ವಾನರಮ್||10||
ತತ್ತ್ವತಃ ಕಥಯಸ್ವಾದ್ಯತತೋ ವಾನರ ಮೋಕ್ಷ್ಯಸೇ|
ಅನೃತಂ ವದತಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ದುರ್ಲಭಂ ತವ ಜೀವಿತಮ್||11||
ಅಥವಾ ಯನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಂ ತೇ ಪ್ರವೇಶೋ ರಾವಣಾಲಯೇ|

ಸ||ವಾನರಃ ತೇ ರೂಪಮಾತ್ರಂ ತು | ತೇಜಃ ವಾನರಃ ನ ಹಿ | ಅದ್ಯ ತತ್ತ್ವತಃ ಕಥಯಸ್ವ | ತತಃ ಮೋಕ್ಷ್ಯಸೇ||ತವ ಅನೃತಂ ವದತಃ ಜೀವಿತಂ ದುರ್ಲಭಂ| ಅಥವಾ ರಾವಣಾಲಯೇ ತೇ ಪ್ರವೇಶಃ ಯನ್ನಿಮಿತ್ತಃ||

"You are Vanara by form only. By brilliance you are not Vanara. Today tell the truth. Then you will be released. If you tell untruth it will be difficult to live. For what reason did you enter the palace of Ravana".

ಏವಮುಕ್ತೋ ಹರಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಃ ತದಾ ರಕ್ಷೋಗಣೇಶ್ವರಮ್||12||
ಅಬ್ರವೀನ್ನಾಸ್ಮಿ ಶಕ್ರಸ್ಯ ಯಮಸ್ಯ ವರುಣಸ್ಯ ವಾ|
ಧನದೇನ ನ ಮೇಶಖ್ಯಂ ವಿಷ್ಣುನಾ ನಾಸ್ಮಿ ಚೋದಿತಃ||13||
ಜಾತಿರೇವ ಮಮ ತ್ವೇಷಾ ವಾನರೋಽಹ ಮಿಹಾಗತಃ|

ಸ|| ಏವಂ ಉಕ್ತಃ ಹರಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಃ ತದಾ ರಕ್ಷೋಗಣೇಶ್ವರಂ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ | ಶಕ್ರಸ್ಯ ಯಮಸ್ಯ ವರುಣಸ್ಯ ನ ಅಸ್ಮಿ | ಮೇ ಧನದೇನ ಸಖ್ಯಂ ನ| ವಿಷ್ಣುನಾ ಚೋದಿತಃ ನ | ಏಷಾ ಮಮ ಜಾತಿರೇವ | ಅಹಂ ವಾನರಃ ಇಹ ಆಗತಃ||

Thus questioned, the best of Vanaras spoke to Ravana." I am not from Sakra or Yama or Varuna. I am not friend of Kubera. I was not sent by Vishnu. I am a Vanara who came here".

ದರ್ಶನೇ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಂದ್ರಸ್ಯ ದುರ್ಲಭೇ ತದಿದಂ ಮಯಾ||14||
ವನಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸ ರಾಜಸ್ಯ ದರ್ಶನಾರ್ಥೇ ವಿನಾಶಿತಂ|
ತತಸ್ತೇ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ಬಲಿನೋ ಯುದ್ಧಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿಣಃ||15||
ರಕ್ಷಣಾರ್ಥಂ ತು ದೇಹಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರತಿಯುದ್ಧಾಮಯಾರಣೇ|
ಅಸ್ತ್ರಪಾಶೈ ರ್ನಶಕ್ಯೋsಹಂ ಬದ್ಧುಂ ದೇವಾಸುರೈರಪಿ||16||
ಪಿತಾಮಹಾ ದೇವ ವರೋ ಮಮಾಪ್ಯೇಷ್ಯೋಽಭ್ಯುಪಾಗತಃ|

ಸ|| ರಾಕ್ಷಸೇಂದ್ರಸ್ಯ ದರ್ಶನೇ ದುರ್ಲಭೇ ಮಯಾ ತತ್ ಇದಂ ವನಂ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರಾಜಸ್ಯ ದರ್ಶನಾರ್ಥೇ ವಿನಾಶಿತಂ ||ತತಃ ಬಲಿನಃ ತೇ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ ಯುದ್ಧಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿಣಃ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾಃ ದೇಹಸ್ಯ ರಕ್ಷನಾರ್ಥಂ ತು ಮಯಾ ರಣೇ ಪ್ರತಿಯುದ್ಧಾಃ||ಅಹಂ ದೇವಾಸುರೈರಪಿ ಅಸ್ತ್ರಪಾಶೈಃ ಬದ್ಧಂ ನ ಶಕ್ಯಃ | ಏಷಃ ವರಃ ಪಿತಾಮಹಾದೇವ ಅಭ್ಯುಪಾಗತಃ||

" It is difficult to get to the presence of the king of Rakshasas. So, I have destroyed the grove to see the king. Then the powerful Rakshasas desirous of war came. To protect my body I fought back. I cannot be captured by Devas or Asuras, by any weapons or ropes. This is a boon I have from the grandsire Brahma".

ರಾಜಾನಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಕಾಮೇನ ಮಯಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಮನುವರ್ತಿತಮ್||17||
ವಿಮುಕ್ತೋ ಹ್ಯಹ ಮಸ್ತ್ರೇಣ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈಸ್ತ್ವಭಿಪೀಡಿತಃ|
ಕೇನಚಿದ್ರಾಜಕಾರ್ಯೇಣ ಸಂಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೋಽಸ್ಮಿ ತವಾನ್ತಿಕಮ್||18||

ಸ|| ರಾಜಾನಂ ದ್ರಷ್ಟುಕಾಮೇನ ಮಯಾ ಅಸ್ತ್ರಂ ಅನುವರ್ತಿತಂ | ರಾಕ್ಷಸೈಃ ಅಭಿಪೀಡಿತಃ ತು ಅಹಂ ಅಸ್ತ್ರೇಣ ವಿಮುಕ್ತೋ ಹಿ | ಕೇನಾಚಿತ್ ರಾಜಕಾರ್ಯೇಣ ತವ ಅನ್ತಿಕಂ ಸಂಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಃ ಅಸ್ಮಿ||

"To see the king I have obeyed the Astra. Bound by the Rakshasas I was freed by the Astra. For some work related to the king I have come to your presence".

ದೂತೋಹಮಿತಿ ವಿಜ್ಞೇಯೋ ರಾಘವ ಸ್ಯಾಮಿತೌ ಜಸಃ|
ಶ್ರೂಯತಾಂ ಚಾಪಿ ವಚನಂ ಮಮ ಪಥ್ಯ ಮಿದಂ ಪ್ರಭೋ||19||

ಸ|| ಅಹಂ ಅಮಿತ ತೇಜಸಃ ರಾಘವಸ್ಯ ದೂತಃ ಇತಿ ವಿಜ್ಞೇಯಃ |ಪ್ರಭೋ ಇದಂ ಮಮ ಪಥ್ಯಂ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರೂಯತಾಂ ಚಾಪಿ||

"Know this that I am the messenger of the highly powerful Raghava. Oh King, please hear these good words from me".

ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯೇ
ಚತುರ್ವಿಂಶತ್ ಸಹಸ್ರಿಕಾಯಾಂ ಸಂಹಿತಾಯಾಮ್
ಶ್ರೀಮತ್ಸುಂದರಕಾಂಡೇ ಪಂಚಾಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ ||

Thus ends the Sarga fifty of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the first poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
